A test drive is the strongest buying signal a dealership gets. The customer sat in the car, drove it, and pictured owning it. Then they said they would "think about it", and in many cases the next dealership that followed up got the sale.

Good follow-up after a test drive is not about pressure. It is about staying helpful and easy to reach until the buyer is ready. Here are five emails that do exactly that.

When to follow up after a test drive

  • Next day: while the drive is still fresh.
  • Day 3: with something new, usually numbers.
  • Day 7: an easy out on timing.
  • Day 14: a polite last email, then stop.

Stop the moment they reply, even if the reply is "not yet". Nothing feels more automated than a reminder that arrives after you have already answered.

Five follow-up email templates

1. The next-day email

"Hi Chris, good to meet you yesterday. How are you feeling about the car now that you've slept on it? If it would help, I can hold it for you until Saturday while you decide."

2. The numbers email (day 3)

"Chris, I went back over the numbers with my manager. There may be a little more room on your trade-in than we talked about. Want me to send the updated figures?"

Only send this if it is true. A real reason to reply beats any clever wording.

3. The finance answer

"Hi Chris, you asked about monthly payments. On a 48-month plan with your deposit, it comes to roughly what we discussed. Would it help if I sent a written quote you can compare?"

4. The timing email (day 7)

"Hi Chris, is the timing just off? No problem. Tell me when would suit you better and I'll follow up then."

5. The last email (day 14)

"Hi Chris, I'll close this out on my end for now so I'm not filling your inbox. If anything changes, just reply to this email. It comes straight to me."

What to avoid

  • Fake urgency. "Only today!" works once and costs you trust for good.
  • Long emails. Buyers read on their phones. Two to four sentences.
  • Generic blasts. Use their name and the car they drove, and send from your own email address, not a no-reply mailbox.
  • Chasing after a reply. The moment they answer, the sequence should stop.

Running it for a whole showroom

One salesperson can follow up by hand. A showroom with dozens of test drives a week cannot, and that is where leads leak. Sequenzo sends follow-ups like these from each salesperson's own inbox, in the same email thread, and stops the moment the buyer replies. Managers can share the flows that work, so every salesperson follows up the same proven way.

Frequently asked questions

Q01How soon should you follow up after a test drive?

The next day. The drive is still fresh and the buyer has had a night to think. Then follow up around day 3, day 7 and day 14, and stop as soon as they reply.

Q02What should a car sales follow-up email say?

Keep it short, mention the car they drove, add something useful - updated numbers, a trade-in figure, an offer to hold the car - and end with one easy question.
